Newbuild project management
The project management team is normally based in Glasgow to oversee the whole project, providing support to the site supervision team and assisting in resolving any conflicts with the shipyard, which is achieved through regular visits to the shipyard.
For more complex projects and as by specific Client requirements, the responsible project manager will oversee the construction stage as the site project manager directly on site.
For each individual project we have developed specific project execution plans which serve as on-site guidance and reference for successful completion of the project.
Our in-house framework for project execution plans has been continuously refined and updated throughout past and present newbuilding contracts, and is tailored specifically towards each new project.
Drawing, specification and contract review
The review and approval of the building specification is the most critical stage for the preparation of the project and should be thoroughly reviewed prior to contract signing.
We review these documents and particular clauses with respect to precise wording in order to identify and avoid potential negative consequences arising during the construction phase; some of which might initially not be obvious.
Our newbuild department in Glasgow is responsible for the specification and drawing review. Our mission is to focus on the factors relating to the daily operations of the project. Drawings are therefore reviewed relating to aspects such as accessibility, maintenance of machinery and systems as well as comfort onboard.
We firmly believe that an excellent site team with strong supervision skills will reduce the overall running costs during the operational life of the project on the basis of initial quality.
Over the past years we have established a core group of trusted and experienced site team personnel who have many years of experience working with us on a number of projects on site as well as in our headquarters in Scotland. Our team includes project managers, site managers and site supervisors as well as project superintendents with highly specialised skills corresponding to project specific requirements such as cargo containment systems, commissioning of DP3 systems and accommodation decks.
We also have access to a large pool of local inspectors, particularly in China and Korea, who have been known to us for many years and who are well aware of the quality level of site supervision our company expects.
Our colleagues can cover all disciplines on the steel, hull outfitting and protective coating side, and as cooperation with the shipyard is crucial during the daily inspection routines, their ability to communicate in the native language is of major advantage.
Quality control and HSE management
Within our site team manuals we clearly outline the site team organisation and the roles and responsibilities of each individual so that lines of authority are clear.
Apart from the actual inspections as scheduled by the shipyard, we consider other aspects of site supervision of equal importance, such as:
- Enforcing HSE procedures on site and within all areas of the shipyard
- Auditing of the shipyard and all subcontractors with respect to HSE and quality control
- Daily patrolling of all workshop areas and subcontractors to ensure highest quality level
- Follow-up of all inspection comments and non-conformance reports prior to final acceptance of inspection items
- Progress monitoring and reporting to head office and Client.
